This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:14
Sometimes I look at my life and think, “How did I get to do this?!”. I serve in one of the most amazing churches in the world. I’ve never seen a church so full of talent, passion and Christ honoring people. This past weekend I got to be a part of Discovery Church’s first ever youth conference. I am in awe of what Pastor Kevin Lewis was able to do.
The weekend was full of worship, teaching, growth and revival. Putting on something like this for hundreds of students is no easy task. The Awakening Conference was put on by almost an enter volunteer based crew. From tech people to break out session teachers, people took off work to be there and gave their time to make sure students knew who Jesus was! That is amazing. People showed up at sunrise to help and didn’t leave until the we hours of the morning to make sure this was an amazing experience for teens in our city.
I had the honor of teaching a break out session and photographing this awesome event. Being a photographer I get to see things that most people don’t. Getting to go back stage and hear the worship band pray together, to walking upstairs and seeing our tech crew with their arms raised in worship during a session. The people who put this event on gave God the glory every single step of the way. Makes me so proud to be on the Remedy team.
There have been so many stories of life change in the days after the conference and God continues to use this ministry to show love to teens and college students in our area. 84 decisions to follow Christ! Countless stories of how God awakened lives to honor Him! It makes my heart full of joy to hear all that God has done in so many lives. I have attended dozens of youth camps and gone to many conferences and you would think I would be uninspired by one more event. I mean really after 13 years of student ministries you would think I had seen it all. Not true. The biggest thing I learned at this conference was that my church, the ministry I serve in is my family. God has blessed me with an amazing family of God. Family that I can’t wait to see each week, family that care about me, family that pushes me to be better and family that serves together.
The one moment that will be burned in my memory from this amazing conference is; right before my break out session four of my dear friends found me hiding because I was so nervous and they prayed for me. How amazing is that? Each of them were important part of the conference and had other places they needed to be, but they knew I needed them. They knew I needed my family there to encourage me. I wasn’t alone, and they made sure I knew that. Thank you Hannah, Bradley, Nicole and Kevin, you made me believe in myself and made me feel loved.
No matter how many camps you’ve been to, no matter how many years you’ve been in a church you can always get something out of an event. You just need to let God work in your heart through the people He places in your life. The Awakening Conference showed me my family, what did it show you?
