For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
In my quiet time yesterday I read this verse, and I read it over and over again. I even wrote it down… several times. FREEDOM. I know this verse, I have it memorized. But my God is amazing and He is constantly breathing newness into His word. He is constantly teaching me, He is always pushing me. And yesterday my heart was really struggling with: what does it mean to be free? What does FREEDOM look like?
Do you live like you’ve been set free? Honestly… do you?
I watch so many people I love live in slavery as they say they walk with Christ. I am guilty of this too. We say one thing with our mouths and then live something different. We are slaves to our fears, slaves to pain, slaves to worry, slaves to money, slaves to relationships, slaves to our homes, slaves to temptation and dare I say it? Slaves to church. Christ died so we could be free and stand firm in that freedom. But what does that really look like, in this flawed world? I feel like some days are easier than others to walk in freedom. Galatians 5:1 says “… do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” and I know that although I have been set free in Christ I willingly pick up the yoke of slavery. That’s just silly, why would someone who knows freedom willingly become a slave to hurtful things?
I am being truly challenged by this verse. I want to choose freedom, I want to stand firm in it. I know that constantly seeking God’s heart in my life will help me walk in freedom. Also bringing my fears to Him sets me free. From reading this verse and meditating on it, I have come to the conclusion that when we walk in slavery it’s a choice. We choose to be slaves to things of this world. It doesn’t just happen, we choose it. And once we understand that we can choose differently, we can choose freedom!
So today I choose NOT to be a slave.
What does walking in freedom look like to you?
