Don’t Forget Where You Came From

1-DSC_9956psI spent five amazing years serving at the church I grew up in, as director of student ministries. I was 21 when I started leading these students, and I had no idea what I was doing. But God did and I am forever thankful for what He did in me and through me at that church. The kids in the photo above changed my life and transformed my heart to beat for students and telling them about Jesus. These 12 core kids are where my passion for teenagers are rooted. I will never forget them and the impact they made on my life. It’s always good for your heart to look back on how God has worked in our lives and see how He has grown us and pushed us to be who we are now. And I want to take a little time today to do that.

I went looking through old pictures from those old youth group days because I ran into one of my old youth kids at the store this past week. God is so good to me and gives me opportunities to run into them and see how they have grown in the four years since my time at that church ended. Some I have lost touch with, others I text and a few I get to have coffee with and be a part of their lives still. They have all grown up and I can’t wrap my mind around the fact that they aren’t kids anymore. Time flies and God has brought hundreds of new students into my life over the past four years, but I will never forget these 12. I will remember every one of their names and their stories for the rest of my life.

They are important to my story as well, they will forever play a part in who I am. They are scattered all over the country now, they are adults and I even just received a wedding invitation from one of them! I also got a lovely message from one about how she recently wrote about me for a paper she was writing for a class she was taking. We will forever be a part of each others stories no matter how much time has passed and how much distance stands between us. We will forever be tied together because God chose to place us at the same church at the same time to serve His purpose. And I am thankful for that.

Take some time today to look back at the people who God has placed in your life and thank Him. It is when we look back that we can see how mighty He has moved in our stories. Never forget where you came from, because God had a purpose then and He does now.

Thank you Matt, Andrew, Meagan, Sarah, Mackenzie, Kiersten, Jessica, Nicole, Aimee, Elyse, Mike and Russell for letting me be a part of your story. You will never know how HUGE of a role you played in mine. I love each of you and miss all of you so very much!
